About This Author

While Charles “Chic” Shaver was a student at Dartmouth College, of Ivy League fame, he had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ that transformed his life. Soon after his conversion, he changed his life plans from a law career to the ministry.

In 2000, he retired, after thirty years, from full time teaching at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri, where he served as the Frank and Gladys Cooper professor of evangelism. In December 2003, he concluded his ministry as associate pastor of Outreach and Evangelism at First Church of the Nazarene, Kansas City, where he had served since 1974. From February to May, 2005, he served in a four month specialized assignment as Guest Pastor of Outreach Ministries at Spring Branch Church of the Nazarene in Houston, Texas. In 2007, he led an intensive, six-week, evangelism training for all pastors of the Alaska District Church of the Nazarene.

His ministry has included the planting and pastoring of two home mission churches, the first of which began in a remodeled horse shed. He has been a full-time evangelist and has preached in camp meetings and at all ten colleges or universities of the Church of the Nazarene in USA and Canada. Dr. Shaver has conducted over 875 preaching missions and preached at the headquarters of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He has taught evangelism in Johannesburg, South Africa; Manila, Philippines; Seoul, Korea; and Moscow, Russia. Presently he is preaching spiritual renewal weeks and revivals across the USA and Canada as a tenured evangelist.

Dr. Shaver has degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B.), Nazarene Theological Seminary (M. Div.) and Fuller Seminary (D. Min.). He has written eleven books or Bible studies, and produced CDs and DVDs. His Basic Bible Studies has sold over 721,000 copies in English and are used inter-denominationally.

On July 27th, 2008, Dr. Shaver was presented the Distinguished Service Award by World Mission Literature, Nazarene Missions International, and Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene. The citation read, “Your commitment and passion for reaching the lost and discipling new believers is evident through your Basic Bible Studies. The Albanian translation, (the 50th language) makes these the most translated pieces of literature in the Church of the Nazarene”. In December 2009, Beacon Hill Press released revised publications of Dr. Shaver as a one year discipleship emphasis, The Journey. They include the Basic Bible Studies for the New and Growing Christians, Who is This Jesus: The Gospel of John (Chap1-15), The Mission of Jesus: The Gospel of John (Chap 12-21), and Basic Bible Studies for the Spirit Filled and Sanctified Life. In 2012, Dr. Shaver released his privately produced CD sermon, Keeping Spiritual Victory, which had previously been available in booklet form.

On May 8, 2010, Deeper Waters, Inc. recognized Dr. Shaver as one of 15 people designated as “Hope Heroes” of Greater Kansas City for 2010.

His wife is Nancy, and June 1, 2015, they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Their children are Rachel, Paul, and Miriam.
