Preaching That Connects: Planned Preaching that Calls Countryside Cristian Church to Engage in Formational Ministries

Description / Abstract

This research into the nature and purpose of the Church is an effort to approach the task of preaching in a way that is more theologically informed. This project was motivated by a detailed study of preaching that strives to develop a more careful and planned approach to preaching. It was also inspired by my study of influential preachers such as John Wesley and Alexander Campbell. Their ministries underscore the importance of understanding the sermon as a catalyst for developing Christian community that forms believers through their active participation. This project focuses on the congregation at Countryside Christian Church in Kearney, Nebraska as a case study for planned preaching that seeks to integrate individuals into the formational ministries of the local church. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the development and effects of a ten week sermon series that was designed to connect members of the congregation to specific ministries currently available at Countryside. The evaluation centers on congregational assessment, sermon development, and various research strategies to explore individual and collective sermon response.
